Catatonia on the Consultation Liaison Service and Other Clinical Settings

“Dr. Carroll and Dr. Spiegel are to be congratulated for editing this authoritative book on catatonia. While this mysterious syndrome was identified in 1874, it continues to baffle psychiatrists unfamiliar with its symptoms, etiology, and treatment. The book was written specifically for C-L psychiatrists, who probably see the majority of cases. Not only does the book discuss its history and nosology (recently changed in DSM-5), but fully describes its assessment. Algorithms are provided that provide a carefully stepped approach to treatment. Because the syndrome is uncommon (though individual symptoms are not), and patients are often unresponsive, it is unlikely that controlled trials can ever be performed. With that in mind, the book provides the best observational data available to help guide treatment planning. Hats off to Dr. Carrol and Dr. Spiegel.” - Reviewed by Donald W. Black, MD, Professor, Residency Training Director, Vice Chair for Education, Department of Psychiatry, University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, IA

"After reading the fascinating history of this disorder from Greek mythology to DSM-5, I was hooked. Many medical books are dry. This one is not! You will understand patients you have treated much better and be well prepared for those that may come your way in the future. Although patients with catatonia are generally mute, this book will serve as their voice. Our patients want us to have the most up to date information on screening, assessment, and treatment. This book delivers just that and it reads very well. If I were ever to have catatonia, I would pray that my doctors will have read this gem." - Reviewed by Kathleen Franco, MD, Professor of Medicine & Psychiatry, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Ohio

“'Green Studio’: Nature and the Arts in Therapy offers a wealth of possibilities for creating with the natural world. It is groundbreaking in supporting the emergence of a nature-centric vision of arts and health. Nature is presented as the whole of the physical world, whether inside an urban studio or outside with the elements, where even the most difficult therapeutic spaces teem with generative powers involving all of the senses and their innate intelligences. Shadow aspects of chaos and upheaval are accepted too, as essential to psyche’s eco-system and arguably art’s most potent and reliable fuel when channeled into life-affirming acts of creative expression. Each of the book’s chapters written by authors from throughout the world demonstrates how micro and macro elements are forever intertwined as they contribute to “earth’s well-being” which in turn generates potent personal medicine.” - Reviewed by Shaun McNiff, University Professor, Lesley University Cambridge, MA and author of many books including Imagination in Action (2015) that envisions creative expression as a force of nature

"This book is remarkable in its exploration of the theme of victims rising above their circumstances - above their own particular victimhood. It is a theoretical, as well as, a practical demonstration of this theme, and also includes the deeply personal, along with case studies of resilience, and the capacity to overcome the particular circumstances which mark one out as bound to bear some particular discrimination, or suffer from some difference, be it a physical or mental difference.” - Reviewed by Raoul Mortley, AO FAHA, Pro Vice-Chancellor International, Executive Dean, Faculty of Society & Design, Bond University, Australia
