The Science of Medical Cannabis

Authors: David S. Younger, M.D. (New York, NY, US)

The cultural, scientific and legislative divide created by vigorous debates over the legalization of medical marijuana is giving way to a new synergy among community stakeholders across the United States. The goal is to improve access to medical marijuana for patients with refractory debilitating neurological disorders, cancer, and chronic pain as an alternative to ineffective pharmacotherapy and potentially addictive pain medications. The ultimate test of our nation’s resolve to ensure the welfare of our sickest patients is the enactment and implement of effective public health reform in the area of medical marijuana, also known as medical cannabis.

This book evolved out of the present need for a definitive volume on the science and public health aspects of medical cannabis to fuel this national narrative. The ethnographic research presented in the concluding chapter was inspired by Professor Miriam W. Boeri and colleagues, at Bentley University in Waltham, MA. They examined views of community stakeholders including medical marijuana dispensary entrepreneurs, health care professionals, and patients in a state that legalized medical marijuana in 2013, yet there continued to be confusion and misunderstandings in the interpretation and implementation of medical marijuana guidelines during the period of policy shifts. Apparent gaps in policy development and implementation signaled the urgency for a comparison study addressing stakeholder views in New York State, where its medical marijuana program has legally dispensed the drug since 2014. The resulting pilot study was carried out in the Division of Health Policy and Management of the City University of New York School of Public Health. The research model incorporated ethnographic and grounded methodologies to detail the views of physicians, pharmacists, educators, patients, and entrepreneur stakeholders; with triangulation of data and application of dominant themes into a socioecological framework model to identify areas of public health policy reform. The findings of this study detail that New York, like other states that recently legalized the dispensation of medical marijuana, faces challenges beyond policy transparency, communication and education explicitly to improve the implementation process for applying and registering medical cannabis dispensaries, referring physicians, and qualified patient recipients.

Ken Langone, Chairman of the Board of New York University Langone Health, and Steven Galetta, Chair of Neurology in the School of Medicine, where the authors is senior staff in neuroepidemiology, motivated him to pursue doctoral training in Health Policy and Management. The author has had the good fortune of interacting with thought-provoking medical students, neurology trainees, public health doctoral students, and professors who reinforce the high ethical standards in medical and public health practice and research. However, his patients still educate him in empathy and humanity. The author is grateful to his family, including his spouse Holly and sons Adam and Seth, who serve as his daily compass, encouraging him to take on projects that promote core values of medicine and humanity.

Nuclear Time Travel and The Alien Mind

Authors: Anton Bernd Schmeikal (Nordmanngasse, Wien, Austria)

Some of the unfunded opportunities (UFOs), like the TR3B or TR6, are already flying; with this in mind, it may appear that this book is published too late. However, this is not the case. Both extraterrestrials and humans have developed craft of similar a “planform”. Officials and the media continuously feed the masses incorrect information. Drive technology of the honestly endeavoring “human” is outdated. It seems to have been copied from some ancient Indian scriptures. Indeed, electrostatic, electromagnetic and rotating plasma drives deliver fermionic power, but they are far from allowing humanity to harness the power of a hyperspace jump. In 2017, NASA ensured us that “for the near future, [a] warp drive remains a dream”. As a matter of fact, both human and extraterrestrial humanoids have hypothesized the use anti-gravity, warping and time travelling vehicles, even what they call “living vessels”. However, both have no theory, no theoretical foundations for nuclear time travel technology. This book delivers a few necessary basics concerning the possible future where this nuclear time travel could potentially become a reality.

What Mum Taught Us: Valuable Lessons and Outstanding Hospitality, Including Precious Mesopotamian Recipes

Authors: Theodora Issa, Ph.D., Touma B. Issa, Ph.D., Tomayess Issa, Ph.D., and Tamara Issa-Raphael (Senior Lecturer, School of Management, Curtin University, Australia)

This book would not have been possible without the existence of that brilliant, vivid, bright, superb, wonderful, luminous, radiant, and very beautiful person whom the authors simply refer to as ‘Mum’, or in their Aramaic (Syriac) language, ܐܡܐ. Their mother was always there for them as they went through the highs and lows of their lives, always encouraging and helping them throughout her life, and this help continued even when the authors became adults. She continued to be a source of great help until she answered God’s call and went into her eternal sleep on that Wednesday afternoon in March of 2016.
This book is written by her five children and is an attempt to keep o Bathqyomo Marine Khoury-Issa’s memory alive.
The idea of this book came to the authors as they remembered that their mother usually encouraged them to pursue their dreams, and she (together with their father) worked very hard to help them reach different milestones in their lives despite the immense difficulties that they faced. Therefore, the authors thought of sharing with others through the pages of this book some of what their mother had taught them, how she made them aware of the plight of everyone around them. Indeed, what their mother used to do throughout her life came naturally and was welcomed by all. Her children felt the way she dealt with them and all those whom she knew was something unique to her, as it came directly from her beautiful heart and delightful soul. It was the magic of her beautiful smile, the kindness of her heart and the selfless actions that she was known for, as she felt being an Orthodox priest’s wife has immense responsibilities of being with the happy, the grieving, the sick, the gravely ill, the displaced, those who belonged to her church and others from outside the church, providing for all of them in a way that was calm, comforting and seamless.
Their mother hailed from Mesopotamia, “the land between the two rivers”. Mesopotamia is the place that is referred to as the “Cradle of Western Civilization”. Therefore, it is worthwhile to mention in this book some of the literature that talks about this great civilization that their parents brought them nearer to by what they taught, told and asked the authors to read in history books. The recipes included in this book were taught to the authors by their mother, and thus have a Mesopotamian origin.
This book is dedicated to the authors’ mother, Bathqyomo Marine Khoury-Issa, with her unique characteristics as a spouse, mother and matriarch of the Issa family. Her care put continues to exist in the food she used to cook (both main dishes and sweets), the care she gave to the garden, the way she faced life and the way she welcomed people into her home and family.

Knowledge or Praxis? An Attributional Perspective in Multicultural Teacher Education

Authors: Yan Yang (Associate Professor in Educational Psychology, University of West Georgia, Carrollton, GA, US)

Globalization and changing demographics in the United States have resulted in a need for higher education to prepare teachers for an increasingly diverse society. To this end, teacher preparation programs in colleges and universities have included a curriculum with required multicultural education courses. Although the important role of causal attribution theory has been well-documented in a wide range of disciplines, its role in multicultural teacher education remains a mystery. In this book, the author first reviews two overarching theoretical frameworks, namely, causal attribution theory and aspects of multicultural education. Second, in an attempt to bridge the gap between causal attribution and multicultural teacher education, the author conducted a study exploring the relationship between causal attribution of cultural awareness and cultural competence among preservice teachers. Participants included 793 preservice teachers from two large public universities who reported their causal attributions of cultural awareness and their cultural competence. Canonical correlation analysis results showed two significant relationships between causal attribution and cultural competence. Personal control over the causes of cultural awareness was found to be positively related to praxis, i.e., behavioral outcome; whereas attributions to internal and stable causes were positively associated with knowledge as major components of cultural competence. The findings indicate the importance of addressing causal attribution and moving beyond negative emotions in improving preservice teachers’ cultural competence in multicultural education. Third, the author discussed the theoretical and pedagogical implications of the study results. Limitations of the study and future directions are also discussed.

From My Cold Dead Hands: Why Americans Won’t Give up Their Guns

Authors: Michael R. Weisser, Ph.D. (Belchertown, MA, US)

This book covers the two arguments made about guns in the United States today. On the one hand, pro-gun advocates claim that the benefit of gun ownership as protection from crime outweighs the risks of intentional and accidental gun injuries. On the other hand, most gun violence researchers claim that the risks of intentional and accidental gun injuries outweigh the benefits of owning a gun. Based on original surveys of gun owners and non-gun owners, primary data from medical and law-enforcement sources, summaries of noted research from both perspectives and personal experiences culled from more than 50 years in the gun business, this book explains why gun control advocates and gun rights advocates are unable to find common ground to develop regulatory policies acceptable to both sides.
The Introduction and Chapter One define gun violence in numeric and demographic terms – where gun violence occurs, who are the perpetrators and the victims, and the accuracy of the data is the numerical data used by both sides to support their solutions to the problem. Chapter Two compares gun violence in the United States to gun violence in other countries and challenges the usual argument connecting our rate of gun violence to the high per capita rate of gun ownership. Chapter Three covers the development of the regulatory system, particularly the Gun Control Act of 1968, and discusses the results of a regulatory philosophy that seeks to control the behavior of gun owners rather than the design of guns, the latter being typical of every other developed country. Chapter Four compares gun control strategies of the gun rights and gun control movements, and Chapter Five looks at strategies to control gun violence committed by unlawful gun owners. Chapter Six analyzes the activities of the regulatory agency and the ATF, and Chapter Seven looks at how the gun making industry operates in ways that create both regulatory opportunities and difficulties. Chapter Eight is a discussion about the 2nd Amendment, in particular how both liberal and conservative explanations about the meaning of the amendment misread its most important point. Chapter Nine and the Conclusion are based on national surveys conducted for this book that highlight the differences between gun owners and non-gun owners regarding proper regulations, control of violence and gun risk.
This book is not an attempt at advocacy. It presents a comprehensive summary of relevant research and analysis of new data to give a comprehensive view of gun violence so that advocates on both sides can be better informed about the issues which need to be addressed.

Engineering and the Future: New Teaching Methods Technology Integrated

Editors: M. Pérez-Sánchez, Ruzan Galstyan Sargsyan, Monica Belda Torrijos and P. A. López-Jiménez (Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, Valencia, Spain)

With a new century, new methodologies and new resources, what do university engineering classrooms demand? People are faced with a society immersed in technology, and as a result, education requires new teaching methods integrated with technology. The objective is to build competencies to acquire and develop specific linguistic and digital competencies in which the student is the one who controls his or her process of knowledge acquisition, and the teacher is the guide.
In the virtual learning environment, there are virtual educational platforms (LMS, LCMS and VLE) with different teaching models (MLearning, BLearning, and ELearning). There are also endless creative and narrative possibilities that offer a unique format capable of converting conventional audio-visual content into an interactive and immersive 360º experience. With virtual reality, it is possible to go beyond solely analysing information; transmitting sensations, emotions and seeing in an immersive way what is explained in class is now a reality.
Education, specifically university education and training in engineering through second languages, has been mimicked in the evolution of society. Virtual reality allows the student to experience from a first person perspective the subject that is delivered through a second language. It is an important tool to tell what, and more importantly, how this action is experienced. With immersive technology we turn the class into a life experience. Virtual environments enhance a favourable environment to acquire knowledge and stimulate interactive learning.
This book presents eight chapters, which develop real case studies. These examples have been taught in different engineering areas of different universities of the world. Chapter One shows the influence of virtual reality on educational practice and didactics on the areas of pedagogy and psychology that was applied in hydraulic areas. Chapter Two describes an innovative teaching process based on problem-based learning techniques (PBL) to be integrated in a photovoltaic systems course. Chapter Three describes a method to improve the skills of technicians in the plastic sector in tasks related to the planning of the manufacturing processes and the exploitation of advanced ICT tools. Chapter Four shows an experience to increase the student’s motivation, and provide them essential key competencies such as instrumental competence, autonomy and self-confidence. The fifth chapter describes two different experiences carried out in mathematics subjects using ICT tools, showing the results via bachelor degrees. Chapter Six shows the advantages and disadvantages obtained from a flipped classroom experience in a university course. In Chapter Seven, the augmented reality will be introduced as a tool that facilitates learning, while discovering what kind of applications and educational materials can be made with this technology and how they can be used in the classroom to enhance and consolidate the linguistic skills of our students in the area of English. Finally, in the last chapter the integration of technologies in all areas of people's lives is considered, showing the use of video as an example.

Aflatoxins and Wildlife: Exposure, Problems, Detection and Control Methods

Editors: Scott E. Henke, Ph.D., and Alan Fedynich (Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Kingsville, TX, US)
Book Description:
Aflatoxins are a highly toxic group of secondary metabolites that are produced by soil fungi, especially Aspergillus spp. fungi. The fungi infect cereal grain crops including corn, wheat, cotton, peanuts, and various other nuts. Aflatoxins can cause serious health concerns because they are known carcinogens, mutagens, teratogens, and immunosuppressive agents. Therefore, limits are in place by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regarding how much aflatoxin can occur in cereal grain that will be consumed by humans and livestock within the human food chain. Such limits are even stricter in Europe than in the United States. Therefore, aflatoxins, when present in cereal grains, contribute to major economic losses in these commodities. However, to date in the United States, aflatoxin concentrations are not restricted within cereal grain provided to wildlife. Various wildlife agencies and organizations recommend limits in aflatoxin concentrations, but these are only recommendations and not mandated by law. Therefore, grain condemned for human consumption can be marketed as feed for wildlife. Unfortunately, wild animals befall the same health concerns as humans when it comes to aflatoxin exposure.
Aflatoxins in Wildlife is a compilation of research concerning the effects of aflatoxin exposure to wildlife by researchers of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. This volume contains sixteen chapters, beginning with a review of aflatoxin, what it is, how it functions in the environment, and its known effects on various species (Chapter One and Two). The book then discusses the potential exposure of wildlife to aflatoxins (Chapter Three), and the prevalence of aflatoxins in feed provided to wildlife (Chapters Four–Six). Chapters Seven–Ten focus on specific effects that aflatoxins have on the physiology of wildlife species, mainly birds, while Chapters Eleven and Twelve research the recovery time needed after aflatoxin exposure and the ability of species to detect aflatoxin within feed. Chapter Thirteen specifically addresses the effects of aflatoxin exposure in wild mammals. The remainder of the book (Chapters Fourteen–Sixteen) focus on testing feed for aflatoxin and how a person can reduce the risk of providing aflatoxin-contaminated grain to wildlife. Aflatoxins in Wildlife is an essential addition to the library of vertebrate and environmental toxicologists, zoonotic disease specialists, veterinary health care professionals, and wildlife biologists.
Scott E. Henke is a wildlife research scientist with the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute and a Regents Professor and Chair within the Department of Animal, Rangeland and Wildlife Sciences with Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Dr. Henke has >150 publications in scientific journals and also is co-Editor of the books Becoming a Wildlife Professional and American Alligators: Habitats, Behaviors, and Threats. Alan M. Fedynich is a wildlife research scientist with the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute and a Professor within the Department of Animal, Rangeland and Wildlife Sciences with Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Dr. Fedynich has authored/coauthored >70 articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The two researchers have collaborated on numerous zoonotic disease and parasite projects.

Focus on Systems Theory Research

Editors: Manuel F. Casanova and Ioan Opris (University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, Greenville, SC, US, and others)

This book offers a multidisciplinary approach to systems theory, investigating its general principles, mathematical models, and applications in health sciences. It describes how leaders in the field have made a transition from equations and models to dilemmas faced in the real world. This book is meant to simplify our understanding of disparate hierarchical and complex open systems in the world by making us aware of patterns of action among its components. These interactions lead to cascading effects within the system which end up changing it as a whole. This self-organization often leads to unpredictable results transforming the system, or integrating the same, into a still more complex system. These results, not necessarily the ones originally sought by their organizers, may offer the system the best opportunity for sustainable and adaptive growth. In the end, readers of this book will gain a basic understanding of systems theory, its application to natural and manmade processes, and how systems grow and equilibrate with their environment in order to continue functioning.

Heusler Alloys: Structure, Properties and Applications

Editors: Julia Coleman

Ternary Mn-based Heusler alloys often exhibit a ferromagnetic shape memory effect,
which is best studied in Ni2MnGa, a prototype of Heusler alloys. Heusler Alloys: Structure, Properties and Applications opens by analyzing how by substituting nickel for iron, another Heusler alloy emerges, Fe2MnGa, with much richer structural and magnetic properties than Ni2MnGa and a large ferromagnetic shape memory performance in slightly off-stoichiometric compositions.
Next, the effects of atomic site disorder on the transport, magnetic, optical, and magneto-optical properties and electronic structures of metallic Cu2MnAl, Ni2MnGa and Ni2MnIn and half-metallic Co2CrAl, Co2MnGa and Co2CrGa Heusler alloy films are been investigated and the findings are discussed.
The concluding study presents first-order reversal curve diagrams of the full-Heusler alloy nanoparticles synthesized by co-precipitation method, followed by thermal annealing at 700 °C under Ar/H2 atmosphere. Interacting single domain particles were dominantly detected from analysis.
